The Pike Pole‘s original use in the fire service was to pull down walls and neighboring buildings to stop a fire’s spread. Modern firefighting pike poles are usually of fiberglass, between 4 feet to 12 feet long, and used to search for fires hidden behind walls and ceilings, to pull items from intense heat and flames, and to ventilate structures by breaking windows.
The pike pole is often hooked at one end to facilitate easier movement of materials, especially drywall and wood.
pike pole models are lightweight and durable; they are sometimes made from fibreglass to save on weight and increase strength and durability. The hook on the end of the pole is usually made of metal such as steel or iron for durability and heavy-duty use. A firemanwill likely use a pike pole to tear down drywall during a fire. This is done to find out if a fire is burning behind the drywall in the wall itself; by revealing the fire, the firefighters can douse the flames or trace the fire to its source more easily and quickly.
It can also be used to break windows for ventilation, pull down ceiling tiles or other materials, and remove items that may add fuel to the fire without getting too close to the flames themselves.
All pike poles have a round fiberglass handle with a plastic core for added stability, maximum strength, and minimum weight. The outside diameter of the handle is 1-1/4 inch.
The All Purpose Hook is the standard hook made to exact specifications in every detail. It is the most versatile hook used in the fire service today. Featuring a multitude of uses, from opening ceilings, walls, floors, mouldings and casings to the rapid removal of wood, lath and plaster.
